my iPhone wish list - updated

Posted on September 24, 2008

Inspired by Roaming Gecko's iPhone wish list I decided to make my own. I like it alot, but it's by no means perfect. In my previous one month review I already pointed out the coverage problem here in Blacksburg. To add to it, tonight our service dropped completely for a period of time.

While I sit here waiting for my laundry to dry, here's how I would change the iPhone:

  • Custom SMS ringtones - You can make your own or buy custom ringtones, but you only use them for incoming phone calls. Why not SMS messages? You can only use one of the six or so built-in alert tones, and almost all of the sound horrible.
  • MMS - No MMS messaging capabilities at all. What?
  • Voice dialing - I'll lump this one in with MMS, under "how is this not a feature yet?"
  • background images - you can set a wallpaper for your home screen, but you only see that for a second, why not a wallpaper behind the icon screens?
  • video recording - old cellphones and any cheap digicam can record video, but not my iPhone
  • iDisk support - the integration of MobileMe is incomplete, I would like to see a way to browse the my iDisk files, PDFs, JPEGs, etc.
  • better vibrate - the vibrate is weak, I don't feel it 3/4 of the time it vibrates in my back pocket
  • repeated alerts - default repeat alerts were just added in firmware version 2.1, but there's no settings to customize it. Some people like it, some people hate it, give us the options to customize it
That's all I can think of for now. I hear a lot of people complaining about the lack of copy-and-paste, I'm curious why? Are you typing a paper on your iPhone? I have yet to find a time when I needed to copy-and-paste anything.

Update 12/1/08 - My iDisk wish has been granted thanks to an app called "MobileFiles," it works great! And there's a few voice dialing apps out, like "Say Who." I still think these two things should be built-in, but third-parties have stepped up to fill the gaps.
